Compassion

“He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities... As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him. For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust.” - Psalm 103:10, 13-14

Kids seem to have a knack of pushing all of their parents buttons, but they also seem to have the knack of knowing exactly where their parents’ soft spots are and pushing them as soon as trouble is on the way. What parent is there that hasn’t given in a little when their children turned the watery doe eyes on them?

God’s compassion isn’t simply about the forgiveness of sins. As David points out, it is also about not making us suffer all physical consequences of every one of our sins. Imagine what your life would be like if God made you suffer the physical consequence of every sin? How many times in your life have you looked back and said, “Wow, I am so glad it didn’t turn out as bad as it could have”?

Instead, David said that God does not repay us according to our iniquities but is compassionate towards us as His children. I know unequivocally that God has treated me leagues better than I deserve. Every word that David said is true. He is a truly awesome God. Bless the Lord, O my soul!
