Careful What You Ask For
“If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” - Matthew 7:11
Right before this statement is one of the most famous verses in Matthew 7, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” Why would Jesus have to instruct us and remind us that our Father knows how to give good gifts? Simply put, we often feel apprehension in asking God to work in our lives, and we frequently admonish others to be careful in what they ask from God.
Yes, our Father may give us what is hard or challenging when we ask of Him, but they are good things! He knows how to give better things than we know how to ask. Though they may be hard or challenging, they are far better for us than we probably imagine.
We are foolish when we fear to ask for God to will and to work good in our lives. And shame on us for every disparaging or discouraging word that we say against God’s good providence. He works all things together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. Never forget this. He knows what we need better than we do. He knows how to provide in ways we can never imagine. He loves us more than we can comprehend. He knows, wholly and completely, how to give good things to those who ask Him!
